FOCUS ON: Autism Awareness Month

What is autism?
The National Autistic Society defines autism as a lifelong developmental disability that affects how people communicate and interact with the world. Autistic people may also experience differences in how they process sensory information.
Why this is important
Many autistic people still face misunderstanding and barriers. It’s crucial to change perceptions and increase acceptance.
Currently, only 3 in 10 autistic people are in some kind of employment. Additionally, 8 out of 10 autistic people struggle with their mental health. (National Autistic Society 2025)
Healthwatch Stockport's Work
Healthwatch Stockport is committed to improving health and social care services for everyone in the community. As part of this commitment, we will be launching a new work programme reviewing accessibility to primary care with additional needs, such as autism.
Advice on how to support individuals with autism in the workplace
The National Autistic Society has produced a guide to supporting autistic colleagues in the workplace. It offers advice on aspects like recruitment considerations, communication, and environment. The guide suggests actions such as:
- Create a structured and predictable work environment.
- Provide clear and concise communication.
- Offer flexibility with sensory sensitivities.
- Promote understanding and awareness among colleagues.
- Be open to making reasonable adjustments.
