Papyrus Hopeline

PAPYRUS is the national charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

HOPELINE247 advisers want to work with you to understand why thoughts of suicide might be present. They also want to provide you with a safe space to talk through anything happening in your life that could be impacting on your or anyone else’s ability to stay safe.

  • For children and young people under the age of 35 who are experiencing thoughts of suicide
  • For anyone concerned that a young person could be thinking about suicide

Young people

Our advisers are all trained to help you focus on staying safe from suicide. Their training enables them to provide advice and support that may help you to move forward and stay alive.

Concerned others

If you are concerned that a young person is feeling suicidal, advisers can support you to start a conversation about suicide and explore options of how best to support them.

Samaritans

Every day, Samaritans respond to around 10,000 calls for help.

They're there, day or night, if you're struggling to cope, need someone to listen without judgement or pressure. They're experienced in listening to people with suicidal thoughts, feelings and plans and are here to support you:

  • when you’re desperate or on edge, they can help you get through that moment
  • they’ll help you make sense of what you’re feeling
  • They can identify other forms of help

They too can help if you know someone who is having thoughts about ending their life. You can contact the Samaritans for emotional support by phone and by email, or you can download their self help app.

Shine a light on suicide

Shine a light on Suicide are bringing suicide out of the dark in Greater Manchester. Whether you’re feeling suicidal, worried someone else is, or have lost someone to suicide, you’re not alone. Whatever you’re going through, we’ll get the support you need.

If you're feeling suicidal, suicidal thoughts are far more common than people realise and can happen for lots of different reasons. Telling someone how you’re feeling is the first step to getting that help, staying safe and getting through this. Shine a light on Suicide highlight local and national organisations that you can chat to including the Samaritans – a 24/7 helpline on 116 123.

C.A.L.M (Campaign Against Living Miserably)

Anyone can hit crisis point. The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) is leading a movement against suicide and are there to help you. Every week 125 people in the UK take their own lives and 75% of all UK suicides are male. CALM exists to change this. CALM run a free and confidential helpline and webchat – 7 hours a day, 7 days a week for anyone who needs to talk about life’s problems, who've hit a wall or need information and support. They too help those bereaved by suicide, through the Support After Suicide Partnership (SASP).
