Our response to warning that pharmacy closures are at record high levels
New analysis by the NPA, which represents independent community pharmacies in the UK, has found the number of pharmacies closing this year is nearly 50 per cent higher compared to the same stage in 2023 – which itself was the worst year in living memory.
The NPA have said today rising costs and declining real terms funding is resulting in the fastest rate of closures in decades – with real terms funding having decreased by 40 per cent over the last decade.
Commenting on the announcement, Louise Ansari, Chief Executive of Healthwatch England said:
"The increase in pharmacy closures in England is concerning. People tell us what an essential source pharmacies are for advice, diagnosis, and getting minor health issues treated. They also help in reducing the pressure on GPs.
"When a pharmacy closes, it impacts communities, especially older people who are the most regular users and those who don't have the means to travel to a pharmacy that is further away.
"The pharmacy sector and healthcare system must work together to provide the service people need."
