The latest statement from the Director of Public Health
Message from Emma Ferguson (Stockport Council)
Hope you are all keeping well and are looking forward to the weekend.
Please find the link to the latest Statement from the Director of Public Health - Stockport Council
In our borough, cases are currently at 324.1 per 100,000, which equates to 126.7 cases per day*. We are still seeing a decline in numbers of people testing positive for coronavirus in Stockport, but this fall may be slowing and rates are still very high. We all need to continue to be cautious if we want to see rates fall further. This means getting the vaccine, limiting the time we spend in crowded indoor spaces, wearing face coverings and maintaining a social distance where appropriate and getting tested and self-isolating when we need to.
This week the statement addresses the Chief Midwife’s plea for pregnant women to go for the vaccine, as many have not yet received the jab
We will continue to be asking residents to get a vaccine when called at the weekly pop ups – especially to get two vaccines and to continue lateral flow tests over the summer.
If you can help share this messaging amongst your networks that would be helpful.
Finally, today is the last day to nominate someone for this year’s GM Health and Care Awards. The awards are a unique opportunity to recognise those people who really have gone above and beyond to care for and support the people of Greater Manchester over the last year. Nominate any worker, volunteer, community champion, or leader who you feel has gone above and beyond over this last year during the pandemic to improve the health and wellbeing of others. For further details and to make a nomination, please visit https://www.gmhsc.org.uk/awards. In order for Stockport Council to have a record of our nominations, please also email peter.owston@stockport.gov.uk

Find out what people and communities need to help them recover and feed it back to help shape services in Stockport for the future.
How to get involved: Check if the organisation you work/volunteer for is a Champion Organisation (e.g. Age UK, SREP, Pure Innovations) as you will be able to join through them.

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People Big Summer Fundraiser
Message from Janet Ratcliffe (Lived Experience Panel Member)
We are raising money for Hearing Dogs for Deaf People by participating in The Big Summer of Fundraising! Every penny we will raise will help more life-changing pup's-in-training who will one day transform a deaf persons life. Hearing dogs are highly trained to alert deaf people to important and life-saving sounds, such as the smoke alarm, alarm clocks and even intruder alarms and baby monitors. They also provide lots of love, companionship and emotional support, which is really important as many deaf people can feel lonely and isolated. It costs £25,000 to fully train an accredited hearing dog, so The Big Summer of Fundraising is a great way to raise funds to train more dogs. Any donation, however large or small, will really help. Thank you.

Heaton’s' Men in Sheds
Message from Ellie Uwin (The Prevention Alliance)
I visited Heatons’ Men in Sheds last night. They are now back up and running with most of their meetings and workshops. (leaflet attached – computing club not open yet)
They are open to anyone (not just men!) for their workshop evenings Wednesday evenings 7-9pm. I spoke with Terry Hewitt, and he said he would be happy to do a small presentation to any groups, so was thinking if anyone would like to contact him for any TAPs etc.
If you don’t already know about Heatons’ Men in Sheds, they are a voluntary group that tackle social isolation in older members of the community (or anyone really and not just men!) They can work together in the workshop, learning new skills and sharing skills. They have some meet ups to just chat and catch up, but also do lots of community projects! Including making the sign for Heaton Chapel train station. Its an amazing group.
